Foreign Beers

At this year’s festival we are offering a selection of beers from Europe and America in a variety of styles supplied via Colin at the Rugby Tap.Chicago based aware winning brewery, the Fire IPA is a dry hopped fruity hoppy IPA made using American and New Zealand hops.

In a first for the festival we are featuring a beer from Croatia, I am not aware of a Croat beer ever being available in Rugby before. When I first ran this bar many years ago I struggled to get a few mainstream Belgian and German beers but due to the worldwide appreciation of high quality beer and its increasing availability we can now offer you an excellent mix of beers from old favourites through to some very interesting new brews.

You may be wondering why there is no mention of “Craft” in this article, it is not due to Rugby CAMRA’s opposition to “Craft”, it is due to my opinion that it is a meaningless phrase randomly applied by brewers and marketers to try and give creditability to beer that may or may not be worthy of it. I have been forced to use the term IPA as several brewers use this to name the beer but again I believe it to be meaningless as it gives no indication of strength, colour or anything else, regards Ivan Farroll

BELGIUM

BRASSERIE (C) - BLACK C 8.0%

Liege based brew pub that is now 6 years old and producing some interesting beers. The Imperial Stout is black with roasted coffee and cocoa aromas finishing with a bitter taste. Unfiltered and unpasteurised.

DE BRABANDERE/BAVIC - PETRUS AGED PALE 7.3%

Flemish based family brewery dating back to 1894. Petrus Aged Pale is an excellent oak aged sour red ale with a dry and tart taste.

DE PLUKKER - TRIPLE PLUKKER 7.5%

Small brewery based on a hop farm near Poperinge since 2012. Brewed using Pilgrim hops this deep yellow coloured beer has a slightly sweet malty taste with a subtle bitter aftertaste. Unfiltered and unpasteurised.

CROATIA

GARDEN BREWERY - IPA 6.5%

Highly rated Zagreb brewery founded in 2016. American style IPA brewed with 6 different hop and 6 different malts gives this golden beer a citrus fruit aroma and flavour which is balanced with a slight sweetness from the south pacific hops and their yeast.

GERMANY

HELLER TRUM - SCHLENKERLA HELLES 4.3%

Heller Trum are famous for their Rauch (smoked) beer which we have featured at the festival many times. This year we have their Bavarian Helles which is classic golden lager which pours with a white foamy head and has a subtle smokiness even though no smoked malt is used.

SCHNEIDER - WEISSE ORIGINAL 5.4%

In my opinion this is the best Bavarian wheat beer, it pours with an amber colour due to the wheat and yeast. The yeast gives it the traditional fruity aromas and taste.

HOLLAND

KEES - EARL GREY WEIZEN 5.0%

One of a new wave of Dutch brewers producing some excellent beers, Kees was set up by a former brewer at the Emelisse brewery. Belgian style wheat beer with spicy yeasty flavour and a bitter hoppy after taste.

DE MOLEN - HAMER & SICKLE 5.1%

Originally based in a windmill with the back door opening onto a canal, could De Molen be anything other than Dutch? They produce some of the best beers in the world and are one of favourite breweries. Hamer and Sickle is a porter with dark brown colour with a malty nutty aroma and flavour and a coffee like after taste.

NORWAY

NOGNE O - IPA 7.5%

Excellent IPA from Norway’s best brewery. Rich malty and bitter IPA with the cascade hops giving it fruity, spicy after taste.
